SOME OF HORSHAM SHOW'S SUPPORTERS:

Kailee O'Beirne (age 15 pictured left, Joyce Bywaters and Mallori Hutchinson age 14)

Kailee_n_co_600_x_450.jpg Every year when the Horsham Show comes around, my cousin Mallori Hutchinson and I are quick to volunteer our help in the Ladies Pavilion with our Nana, Joyce Bywaters.  We started helping when we were very young.  We began by cleaning out the display cupboards which we still love to do.  However now we help steward, take show entries and organise them to put on display.

This isn't a typical job a teenager would agree to do but knowing that you've done something to help out others is a great feeling.  It also gives us an opportunity to spend time with our Nana in the holidays and is a really rewarding experience to work with ladies of all different age groups.  I really value the organisational and communication skills I've learned and continue to learn along the way as I prepare to enter the work force in the future.  Sometimes you can only learn those skills through experience and I'm pleased that I can include them on my resume.

For the 2011 show, I was also asked to help with the Miss Showgirl competition.  I enjoyed being an entrant in 2010 so it was great to see what it was like from the other side of the fence.  Taking entries on the Wednesday and making sure all the entrants had a registration number was a really busy process just before the 1.00pm judging time.

Although we don't get any financial reward for helping, we gain satisfaction knowing that we've made someone's job so much easier and have had fun doing so.

Dalton Cross (age 18 pictured left with Kate Cross winner of Rural Ambassador of the Year - Horsham)

Rural_AmbI began volunteering at the Horsham Show when I was 12.  I helped out in the Animal Nursery just looking after the bird section as I had a few budgies and cockatiels.  Now, 6 years later I share the organisation of the Animal Nursery with Anne Lane.  Along with Anne and her late husband Eric, I've pretty much repaired all the animal cages and enjoy setting up the yards which I begin to do about 2 weeks before the event.  I love being involved in setting up the nursery as I have heaps of pets at home from budgies (still) to goats.  The animals I don't have, I get from local people.  I've made lots of friends out there and I make good contacts with people who are interested in swapping or buying animals from me or vice versa.  For the 2011 show, Anne & I set up a special animal petting area.  It was great and all the little kids loved it and so did their parents because it was free!  We'll definitely be doing that again!

In 2011 I decided to join the committee along with my mum who organises the Miss Horsham Showgirl event and has done so for about 5 years.  My Grandpa Schulz (who died before I was born) began showing horses and cows in 1970.  He used to take a mare and foal in for the nursery organisers, so I guess being involved in the show is pretty much a family tradition.

Kate Cross (who's no relation to me) won the Rural Ambassador of the Year and I won the Junior Rural Ambassador of the Year.  The awards are for young people who are involved in their local community and also take an interest in agricultural shows.  I didn't know I was even nominated til 2 days before the show.  Winning this award takes Kate & I to St. Arnaud in February where we compete at the next level against other small town winners.  I'm not sure if I'm happy I won because I think I have to make a speech and I don't like public speaking!  At the end of the day I'd like to see more young people get involved in volunteering at the Horsham Show.  It's a lot of fun and since I love animals it's a win win situation for me.  Knowing your passion and being able to share it with others is really rewarding.  Your passion could be cake decorating or photography.  Whatever it is bring it to the show and get involved!
